Dr. Marchettini is Director of the Pain Medicine Center, Scientific Institute H. San Raffaele in Milan, Italy, that he founded in 1989. He has a teaching appointment on pain pathophysiology at the Health & Life University of the same Institute. He received his medical degree from the University of Milan School of Medicine in 1979, and specialized in neurology and orthopedic surgery. Dr. Marchettini completed his internships in Italy at the General Hospital of Bergamo, the Neurological Institute C. Besta, Milan, and the Scientific Institute H. San Raffaele, Milan. He has also completed fellowships abroad, in neurophysiology of pain with Prof José Ochoa in Madison Wisconsin and Portland Oregon and neurology of sensory function with Prof Ulf Lindblom at the Karolinska Hospital in Stockholm.

Dr. Marchettini is a member of several scientific organizations, including the Scientific Committee for the 2003 meeting of the Federation of the European Chapters of the International Association for the Study of Pain, the European Neurological Society, and is a founding member of the “Gruppo Neuroscienze e Dolore” of the Italian Neurological Society. His experimental studies have been focused on identification of primary muscle nociceptors in humans and on the effects of systemic local anesthetics on the intraneural recording of abnormal neuronal hyperactivity in patients and animal models of neuropathy. His current interest is the clinical management of neuropathic pain and research on the long-term effect of intrathecal opioids for the treatment of chronic and cancer pain syndromes. Dr. Marchettini has authored numerous journal articles, book chapters, and abstracts. He has also served as advisor in pain research for the French Research Institute (INSERM) and pharmaceutical companies (Pfizer, Élan, GlaxoSmithKline, and Teva) and Biotechnological companies (Medtronic USA, Medoc Israel). He is currently consultant for Newron Pharmaceutical Italy.
